Impressions of Resistance: Printmaking in Puerto Rico

This documentary will delve into Puerto Rico's rich printmaking and graphic arts culture, emphasizing its crucial role in amplifying voices and addressing contemporary issues.

The film will chronicle the evolution of printmaking on the island, from its initial use as a propaganda tool during Puerto Rico's transition to a U.S. colony in the late nineteenth century to its current role as a powerful medium for protest and self-expression. By examining the historical arch of printmaking in Puerto Rico, the documentary will highlight how contemporary artists have repurposed this art form to create bold, diverse graphics that resonate with today's social and political climates.

The production will feature a wealth of resources, including archives of the Museo de Antropología, historia y arte de la Universidad de Puerto Rico, archives of the Museo de San Juan, archives of the Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña. Interviews with esteemed local printmakers like Poli Marichal and Fernando Santiago will offer insights into their creative processes and their relationship to the medium as a political vehicle.
