Impresiones de Resistencia: Printmaking in Puerto Rico
This documentary explores printmaking in Puerto Rico as a living practice shaped by education, resistance, and daily life under an ongoing colonial condition.
At the heart of the film is the story of the División de Educación de la Comunidad (DIVEDCO), a groundbreaking Puerto Rican program that used printmaking as a tool for public education, cultural identity, and collective memory in the mid-20th century.
Through conversations with contemporary Puerto Rican printmakers, the documentary explores themes of migration, economic instability, and institutional neglect, while asking why printmaking, an accessible and community-centered medium, continues to hold such importance on the island today.
The film brings together archival material from institutions including the Museo de Antropología, Historia y Arte, the Lázaro Library at the Universidad de Puerto Rico, the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico, the Library of Congress, and the Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña, alongside interviews with artists such as Poli Marichal and Fernando Santiago. Together, these voices and histories reveal an ongoing conversation between Puerto Rico’s past, present, and future.
